Kingston HyperX SH100S3B/120G SSD review
Partially due to the rising of hard drive prices that I discussed in a previous post, I decided to go with a solid state drive (SSD) as my main drive in my new build. I've heard about a lot of performance benefits from switching to a SSD, especially for installing your OS on and running system intensive resources. You can find stats referring to this such as 500mb/s sequential read times, 300mb/s sequential write times, etc. This all sounds great, but when you actually see a SSD based system in action - it'll blow your nerdy little mind.
The solid state drive that I went with is the Kingston HyperX SH100S3B/120G. I installed Windows 7 Business Pro 64 as my OS. I also installed Adobe CS5 Studio, Office 2010, and The Sims 3 (plus 8 expansions). First of all, the install times were as follows
Windows 7 - 12 minutes
CS5 Studio - 8 minutes
Office 2010 - 2 minutes
Sims 3 & expansion - 13 minutes
Once installed, here was the average load/boot times that I was seeing.
Windows 7 - 7 seconds
CS5 Studio - 1 second
Office 2010 - less than 1 second
Sims 3 & expansions - 18 seconds
This is about 5 to 6 times faster than the load and install times that I was seeing with a standard 7200rpm hard drive.
